Puccini – Suor Angelica; Gianni Schicchi

Božidar Smiljanić performs the role of Betto.

Royal Academy Opera presents two of the three one-act operas from Puccini’s Il trittico, premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in December 1910. Suor Angelica is the story of a young nun of royal background, whose past is revealed with appalling consequences. These are all the more poignant for taking place in surroundings of tranquil
contemplation.

This tragedy is balanced by the comedy Gianni Schicchi, an outrageous tale of greed and fraud, as family members fight over the substantial contents of a rich man’s will. Both these operas are delivered in ingenious scores from Puccini, with music that reveals subliminal insights: there is comedy in the tragedy, and tragedy in the comedy.

The Academy is delighted to welcome William Kerley to direct this double bill, and Peter Robinson to conduct it.
